Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370607 AB OBJECTIVE: To assess the needs of support for people fearing HIV infection in Japan by analyzing calls to AIDS Hotline. METHODS: All records from telephone counselling at the '36-Hour AIDS Hotline' organized by Japan HIV Center, an NGO in Japan, on 27-28th November 1993 in accordance with the World AIDS Day, were analyzed. 2775 calls were received in 14 cities during 36 hours. 72.5% of the calls were made by males. 75% of all cases were from the 20-49 age bracket. RESULTS: 1930 cases (79.9%) had fear of HIV infection which was the main reason to call. 64.7% of these calls were from males. 43.3% of all calls from females (324 cases) were made due to their fears based on their past sexual behaviors. As for the pattern of the sexual behaviors, 90.7% was heterosexual, 8.6% homosexual, 0.7% bisexual. Out of 1082 males and 241 females, 69.7% of males and 14.9% of females had sexual relations with prostitutes. DISCUSSIONS AND CONCLUSIONS: The results show there is an urgent need for governmental and non governmental organizations to provide more information and promote activities for the purpose of preventing HIV infection as well as lessening fears of infection.
